The Italian IGF is intended to convene the multi-stakeholder representatives of the Italian Internet community to discuss about the issues of the national net, particularly related to the most pressing ones, trying to define some common and shared elements and positions.

Then, as UN Fora, Italian IGF aims to provide a national open-dialogue space, able to connect    government, parliament, public administrations, industries, academia and civil society, encouraging sharing practices and innovative partnerships.

Since its first edition in 2008, the Internet Governance Forum Italia is promoted by Italian chapter of Internet Society (ISOC) in conjunction with the National Council for Research, but every year it had a different team of organizers, except for a stable core of people.
